Jerzy Marek
A self-taught painter noted for his small-scale Primitive work. Born in Poland, he lived in Britain from 1947 onwards. Was a civil engineer before becoming a full time painter in the 60s. His Naive paintings often use several layers of paint, giving a 'velvety' appearance, while his subjects include pastoral scenes, interiors, and close-ups of animals and people. He favoured enigmatic expressions on the faces of his animals, rather than pleasing ones. He exhibited in the UK, Poland and elsewhere.
