Albert Osabu Bartimeus

1927 - 1988

Bartimeus was an important figure in the modern art movement in Ghana. He was first president of the Ghana National Association of Artists, and was, until his retirement from the civil service, the Deputy Executive Director of the Ghana Tourist Board. He is best known for his genre paintings, his landscapes and seascapes, and for his lavish application of paint and exuberance of colour, and the simplicity of his depiction of figures.

His work can be found in every major institution in Ghana, including the National Gallery and National Museum. An annual prize named in his honour was set up in the late 1990s to promote emerging young artists and progressive tendencies in contemporary Ghanaian art. A mini-retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the National Museum Accra in April 1996.
