Roland Davies

1904 - 1993

Cartoonist, commercial artist, and painter, Roland Davies studied at Ipswich School of Art. He became an apprentice lithographer, then turned to illustration, starting with cinema posters and illustrations for the magazines Autocar and Motor Cycle, and later moving onto comics. Roland Davies is best known for his comic work, and he drew series for The Beano and TV Comic amongst others, and designed comics in a realistic style. During the Second World War he worked for the Ministry of Information on books and posters for propaganda, information and morale-boosting purposes. In 1970, Roland Davies left the comics field and devoted his attention to painting, creating nostalgic city street scenes, military and aviation, and marine and cowboy pictures.
