Harry Eccleston
1923 - 2010
Watercolour painter, printmaker and teacher, Eccleston was the first full-time in-house artist and designer of banknotes at the Bank of England. He designed the first pictorial notes - Newton, Wellington, Florence Nightingale, William Shakespeare and Christopher Wren. He was President of the RE (Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers), and is also noted for paintings and etchings of the industrial landscape of the Black Country.
