Peter Scott
1909 - 1989
Sir Peter Markham Scott CH, CBE, DSC, FRS, was an ornithologist, naturalist, conservationist, artist and author who travelled the world painting rare birds and studying wildlife. Scott was born in London, the only child of Antarctic explorer Robert Falcon Scott and sculptor Kathleen Bruce. He had his first exhibition in London in 1933. During World War II, he served in the Royal Navy, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for bravery. He was a founder of the World Wildlife Fund and several wetland bird sanctuaries in Britain. He inspired many people to care for wildlife and the environment long before it became mainstream to do so. Sir Peter is a legend in wildlife circles. As an artist, he exhibited widely, including a number of works which were shown at the Royal Academy.
